The 6th Sense Fishing Whale may very well be the most underrated bait in the last few years. While throwing a swimbait on forward-facing sonar has become a very popular technique, more people seem to focus on a ribbed swimbait. The focus shifted from traditional boot tail swimbaits to the ribbed boot tail leaving space for the traditional boot tail to improve. The 6th Sense Whale takes swimbaits and puts an interesting twist on its action. Along with a tail that creates a subtle head wobble and good kicking action, it has two pectoral fins that quiver. The pectoral fins have a quivering action that really seems to get fish agitated in pressured situations. The Whale is durable and holds up very well after multiple fish catches.
My favorite way to fish the Whale is as a single swimbait on a jighead. Cast it out and slowly retrieve it with a slight bow in your line for the best action. On this retrieve, the bait wobbles, kicks, and quivers, all of its features to entice a finicky fish to eat.
On March 4th, I turned to the 3-inch whale in Pro Shad on Lake Cumberland. We had fished traditional baits such as the 2.8 Keitech, but the fish would follow the bait without committing to it. I made the switch to the whale to see if they wanted a different action. It was instantly successful, and we proceeded to catch these fish that would follow a Keitech but not commit. We used this bait by casting at individual fish on forward-facing sonar. Matching the colors to the forage we were fishing around and got it in front of as many fish as possible. Out of curiosity, one of us would cast a Keitech at a fish we would find, and if it didn’t seem interested, we would throw the whale in and let it work its magic. More often than not, the whale would catch the fish that didn’t like the Keitech. One of my favorite parts is that I never had to switch baits the entire day. The one whale I have tied on has held up and still is in working condition!
