The third stop of the Malone’s Marine Marshall Bass Super Series is set takeoff tomorrow out of the Stonewall Resort. And with the reports from practice we are entering a spawning showdown but the weather might hinder said spawning showdown.
Weather for Saturday’s event shows a high chance of rain all the way up to a 90% chance at 8:00am. Low of 63 in the morning and the high will reach up to 72 at weigh-in.
From multiple reports there are a large number of fish located on the banks setting up to be a spectacular tournament as far as weights go. While the spawning fish will be available, the weather will make it challenging for anglers wanting to visually look at them and catch them.
Currently sitting in 5th in the Team of the Year race is duo of Cody Huddleston and Zach Horrocks who also won the Marshall Trail tournament on Stonewall. I spoke with Cody over the phone just a bit ago to get his take.
“There is a lot of fish up shallow and spawning. Problem for us, we ain’t seen a giant just yet,” said Huddleston.
With a little warmer spring this year, you would imagine there is also a good number of fish already spawned out and further along.
“There are some big ones up cruising but not locked up. Which makes me think they are fry guarders or they have already finished up spawning.”
Fry guarders will also be a possibility in this tournament and a team could find success targeting just fry guarders. But not only fry guarders, Huddleston says the shad spawn could play a big role tomorrow with the overcast conditions.
“There’s shad up spawning everywhere you go,” said Huddleston. “If someone can figure out that deal, they could win the tournament doing it.”
While Huddleston and Horrocks will be looking to defend their title, Samples and Stewart will look capitalize in the TOY race. The Fitzgerald’s will be without Dylan this weekend and from a phone call last weekend, Brian might be on the mend with an ankle injury.
“Dad stepped off of the dock (last Saturday) and twisted his ankle right before we won the Summersville tournament. So, we’ll see how that goes.”
Last year during this same tournament Huddleston and Horrocks set the all-time single day weight record for a Marshall tournament with a 17.88-pound bag. With the same timing and raining conditions look for the record to be broken again.
“When you have the possibility of breaking the all-time single day weight record, how could you not be amped up for this tournament,” said Team President Bailey McKinney. “It’s one I have been the most excited for all year so I am ready to see it all play out.”
Takeoff begins at 7:00am on Saturday and weigh-in starts at 3:00pm on Saturday at the Stonewall Jackson Marina. Follow along with everything Marshall Bass Super Series on Facebook!
